What it is: Our friends at Wikipedia have this to say, “Bhante Henepola Gunaratana is a Sri Lankan Buddhist monk … [He was] born December 7, 1927 in Sri Lanka. He was ordained as a monk at the age of 12, and … came to the United States at the invitation of the Sasana Sevaka Society in 1968 … He is the author of the considerably influential work Mindfulness in Plain English.” The book is a staple of the American “Vipassana”, or mindfulness meditation, scene. As an act of generosity by its author, It is available for free at a number of places on the web (flex your Google-fu to check it out).

Description: A straight up masterpiece. This book is filled with deep, true, authentic Buddhist wisdom, and yet is written in an easy, extraordinarily clear Americanized vernacular. It is a comprehensive introduction for mindfulness meditation practice, filled with clear instructions for the path. The book challenges the reader to go deep and to practice properly, but it also has a simple, patient, humorous, kind, smiling vibe to it. Covers a wide ground, and yet touches on each subject in depth.

Anecdote: It is my experience that neither Bhante G (as he is known)’s other books nor his live lectures are quite as piercingly clear and smooth as this book is. Relevant here are the rumors that MiPE was ghost-co-written with an American professional writer.

Potential Turn-Offs: Don’t read this book if … ummmm …. if you don’t like being happy? Honestly, I can’t really think of any negatives to it. This book rökkz harder than John Bonham flying a F-35 JSF (while wearing Iron Man’s battlesuit).

What I Got out of it: I’ve been sitting meditation for twenty years and teaching it for five, and much of my grounding in the practice has come out of this book. Any meditation practitioner I know who is looking to deepen their understanding of the practice has gotten value from their engagement with this book. It’s everything you wish your mom had taught you about meditation practice. Anytime I pick up and re-read a little bit of it, I feel soothed, clarified, and a feeling of the worthwhileness of being aware, intentional, and alive.

Location: North Fork, CA (and others)
What it is: A ten-day silent retreat to learn Vipassana meditation. The course is designed for all levels, even people who can’t sit still for longer than it takes to check email. The instruction leads you bit by bit to the first real sit a few days in. Don’t expect to show up, shut up, sit down, and deal with it. This course gives you tools that build, so you can feel some progress and be able to make that first sit, at around day 5, a real one.

This particular style of Vipassina only has one teacher in the world at any given time, so the instruction was delivered via a pre-recorded video. I expected this to be a big turn-off, and it ended up feeling very natural.

Growth Potential: Vipassana meditation is designed to change the habits of one’s mind. Instead of living in constant reaction to the world and in constant slavery to craving and aversion, the Vipassana mind moves through the world with balance, equanimity, compassion, and power. After the course you might sit straighter, move more intentionally, and think a little more clearly without all the usual clutter that you probably don’t even realize you have.

Pop Potential: The food is yummy. Super tasty, clean, real vegetarian food prepared with love.

It’s affordable: the course is by donation only, and the organization prefers a donation of service (make yummy food for the next course!) to a donation of money.

“Get Real” Potential: The technique is a secular and potentially even non-spiritual practice, and that’s one of its merits. Anyone of any belief can practice and benefit from it. But in the teaching of the technique, a little Buddhist dogma (talk of karma and reincarnation) sneaks in.

What I Got out of it: I sharpened my mind, connected it with my body in deep ways, had some intense experiences of having my corporeal self disintegrate, and effectively changed my consciousness (for the better, I think). I’ve had a few difficult conversations since my retreat, and noticed that it was much easier and faster for me to clear my head and find resolution than I feel I’ve done in previous tough talks. So far, I’m still practicing Vipassana, and I plan to keep it up.

Location: Muir Beach, CA
What it is: Green Gulch is the San Francisco Zen Center’s retreat center in Marin County, CA. They have a Sunday sit that’s only $5 donation requested for 45 minutes of really good meditation in a really beautiful setting in a Zendo on their ranch (really), followed by a talk by one of the monks. If you want to go to a longer 1 day, 2 day, weekend, week-long, or even 3 month retreat there, that’s possible, too.
Growth Potential: Zen Buddhism, especially meditation, is all about letting go of desire – the root of all pain and suffering. Sometimes, sitting for long periods of time is easy, as a respite from the world. Other times, you can’t shut your mind up. The SF Zen Center is good at providing a setting for you to work through the noisy-mind phase and work towards calm … especially at Green Gulch, where the peaceful setting is very conducive to tranquility.
Pop Potential: The SF Zen Center’s approach has always been to make meditation and a Zen Buddhist lifestyle easily accessible to Westerners. In the Bay Area, its not a stretch…but their approach is easy and no pressure, so even a Midwesterner would have no problem. I even like the monks’ talks, as they don’t try to get too tremendously caught up in quoting the Zen koans and Japanese philosophers from the last millenium. Talks are always geared toward modern topics with relevance. Mainly, its a good weekend getaway for the over-stressed and over-worked Type A SF city boy or girl.
“Get Real” Potential: At times, like any of the Bay Area’s alternative “seeker”-type activities, you may look around the room and notice a preponderance of spiritual, middle-class, middle-aged caucasian folk. Buddhism is so fashion forward. But don’t go for who’s there or why they’re there. Just decide what you want to get out of it and go get that. Which leads me to…
What I Got out of it: I don’t go nearly enough, but its one of my favorite Sunday activities. I feel so centered and calm afterwards and usually just want to sit in the herb garden and stare at the grass or the flowers. Much better than staring at a computer. Oh, and the tea and muffins are good, too. After its all over, you can try their organic lunch, walk down to the beach, or jet on over 5 minutes to Stinson Beach for a good old-fashioned beach hang-out.
