What it is: Getting Things Done, or “GTD” to the converted, is a breakdown of how to clear out space for doing the things you really want to do. The nutshell is that we all carry around lots of “todo”s and “todosomeday”s in our heads, and Allen drops a whole slew of common-sense techniques to get it out of your head so that you can enjoy life without worrying what you’re forgetting. His premise is that only when our minds are clear (are they ever?) and our thoughts organized (easy for you non-ADD folks) can we produce effective results and unleash our creativity.
Location: San Francisco, CA What it is: This is a 3 day course designed to help people have more pleasure, and fulfillment in all aspects of their life, with an emphasis on their intimate relationships.
What it is: Individual financial coaching with Joetta Johnson of Conscious Bookkeeping. Conscious Bookkeeping coaches don’t tell you how to make money or how to invest it; they actually help you CHANGE YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO MONEY so it’s easier for you to make it and you know what do with it once you have it.
What it is: The 4 Hour Workweek is a book about designing your lifestyle to inform your job as opposed to your job informing your lifestyle. It outlines strategies for delegating, streamling and outsourcing tasks (yes to India or China) to free up time and stress so that you can do the things you really want to do. Central to the premise of this book is that free time to do what you want (be it to start a nonprofit, or learn to dance the Tango) should be the goal, not accumulation of material wealth.
What it is: This book provides an easy-to-use template for thinking through what kind of a person is your “perfect customer” and even more importantly, how you might attract that “perfect customer” into your life. And even though they use the word “customer,” it’s really about attracting whatever you want into your life: the perfect partner, job, friend…whatever!
Location: Arizona, New Mexico, Texas What it is: NOLS (the National Outdoor Leadership School) is a wilderness-based education program. During the course of a program (which range from 7 days to a full-semester), students learn leadership skills, learning styles, personal assessment techniques, and outdoor skills, of course. Not everyone’s journey is as extreme as this video (from a different NOLS region), but you do get tested and lots of support in overcoming each obstacle.
Location: SOMA/Mission district of San Francisco, CA What it is: The Authentic Man Program (AMP) presents an opportunity for you, or any man, to get really curious about who he is. This course gave me the tools to feel and understand that the way other people experience me is different, sometimes drastically, from the way I might expect or hope for them to experience me.
At the risk of being slightly dramatic, the best way I can describe it is this: take the movie “The Matrix,” and imagine that you were in the matrix a few days before the events of the movie occur. Even if you ran into Neo and started telling him everything that was about to happen to him — about how the world is actually a computer simulation, that he’s actually asleep in some field somewhere, all of it — there’s no words you could speak such that he would actually understand on a deep level what’s about to happen to him. You just have to do it to get it.
